Let’s Talk about Coleman’s Burgers and Bakery
Let’s talk about a great Okmulgee burger! Folks have been telling me to try Coleman’s Bakery out for months! Talk about irony! I was reading through comments trying to decide where to try next while watching reservation dogs. In the midst of the episode, the crew rides their bikes in front of Coleman’s bakery.
I think it was a sign. Ancestry.com provided evidence of my native DNA. I believe that, along with this scenario awakened my warrior spirit which told me to head to Okmulgee and indulge in Coleman’s deliciousness! Some may say… Steve, it says your native DNA is from Sinaloa. Since you also have Spanish DNA, isn’t that just a good old fashioned Mexican? Whatever! That’s not the point. The point is.. well I’m not sure what the point is, but Coleman’s was awesome!
Walking in, there is not a ton of seating, but it was sufficient. There is a sign saying made from scratch, a basic menu, and a lot of baked goodies. I got down with my standard double bacon cheeseburger, fries and some onion rings. The burger was really good, and the homemade onion rings were to die for. The guy next to me had chicken strips which looked amazing. I couldn’t help but wonder what the chicken fried steak would be like, which I will try next time.
After the meal we got some Italian cream cake which was great. I also got some cookies to go. These were like everything cookies with a ton of goodies in them. Besides being absolutely delicious, what really struck me was the perfect consistency. Biting into them, there was a crispness with a soft center. Yum.
Everyone was as sweet as can be. When the gals found out it was my first visit, they took the time to explain their menu, and were ultra hospitable. When I asked if their chicken, and chicken fried steak were home made and not frozen, she looked at me with an off course look, told me to hold on, then introduced me to the guy who does all the breading.
The food, atmosphere, and hospitality make this place a must try. I will certainly be back. Prices were fair, and I could not imagine anyone leaving this place without a full belly and heart.
Hi, Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
The building that Coleman’s is in has belonged to the same family for almost 100 years, when it was called People’s Bakery, my great grandmother would pick up their flour sacks and sew them into aprons and sell them during the Depression, and then buy her bread there. Its been a bakery since 1926. Back in 99, I bought my wedding cake there for $75. Back in the early 80’s I would stop in there before school and get cinnamon roll and coffee for 50 cent. Their burgers and steak strips are the best in the county.. (By popular vote). You are stepping back in time walking through their door. The quality of the food attests to a 100 year legacy of love and cooking experience.
