Let’s Talk about Hammett House

by | Apr 11, 2022

Let’s talk about chicken fried steak!! One of the things I looked forward to after moving from California was an authentic southern chicken fried steak. To my disappointment, so many places fell short. Most were either all breading and oily or frozen. Yuck! That doesn’t even count the instant mashed potatoes and gravy. Over the years I’ve found a few decent ones, but what I found at Hammett House in Claremore last night is rare.

What did I find you may ask? It was not only a great chicken fried steak, but great homemade fare. I knew I was in for a treat when the parking lot was full and there was real butter on the table. Few things are more frustrating than good bread accompanied with margarine. I can hear it now. What about cinnamon margarine? Yeah well, that’s a debate for another time!

Back to the Hammett House! The place was 3/4 full at 5 PM, but there was plenty of parking. Our server was super nice and answered all my questions which can be summarized by… is this homemade, is this homemade, is this homemade etc etc etc. Her patience was boundless! We had homemade ranch dressing, chicken fried steak, and mashed potatoes and gravy. We also got the chokes and cheese. Just so all you perverts know that is an artichoke appetizer, not a stag film!! Okay that may be gross, but the appetizer was great!

I loved the ranch. It’s that homemade recipe that I remember diners using growing up. When the chicken fried steak came out, it was perfect. Not greasy, not too much breading, and seasoned perfectly. A good tender piece of beef as well. I’ve gone to spots that bring out this massive, appetizing CFS. Then when you cut into it is like the Griswold turkey. All fried batter, no meat. Not Hammett House! They did it just right. The mashed potatoes and gravy were just as good, as was the service.

If you love real food done right and have a hankering for a great chicken fried steak, make the trip to Claremore. You will be glad you did!

  1. Just wait until you try their pampered fried chicken or fish and chips. If you like rubber sandwiches, theirs is the best I’ve ever had. Swedish meatball soup, I could just go on.
